Jodie and Ty’s Real Life Wedding

Jodie and Ty

How did you meet?
We met through friends at my sisters fiancé’s house. It sounds a bit strange as I was 14 and he was 21 but although I was going out with someone else at the time, I saw Ty and I fell in love with him straight away. We got on really well for four months. During that time I was pestering him to go out with me and of course he said no because of my age. I told him I loved him after a few weeks and he just laughed, but eventually he gave in. Seven and a half years later we’re still here!

Describe the marriage proposal.
We were only together for six months when he sold his drum kit, and with that money he brought me a ring. He asked my dad first and he agreed. Then, in my bedroom, Ty got down on one knee and asked me. Of course I said yes, then we went to my local off licence and bought some wine. Not the most romantic of proposals, but hey, he did it!

How long did you spend preparing for the day and how was it?
After six and a half years together and two children, I noticed that it was our seven year engagement anniversary next year and it fell on a Saturday. I said how cool it would be if we could get married on that day. He, as usual, just gave me this look and a distant ‘yeah’. But the next day, I was at home when he phoned – nothing unusual there because he always phones, but he told me that we’d get married on that day. I didn’t take him seriously, but he stayed true to his word and started to get things booked. That was in July 2002. We planned the day for 14 months. The day was better than I expected. It was brilliant. I have so many good memories.

What type of wedding ceremony did you have and where?
Neither of us is religious so we had our ceremony in the local register office. It was perfect for what we wanted.

Where did you hold the reception and what was it like?
We held our reception at a lovely hotel which is local to us. The staff were brilliant and helpful and the room was beautiful, thanks to Confetti! The meal was so relaxed because we had 24 adults and four children and we had the table in a ‘U’ shape so everybody was facing each other.

I bought little organza bags with a rose quartz heart shaped pendant that I had made in Wales. These had our initials and the date of the wedding on them. Then I found the meaning of everybody’s name on the internet and placed these in the organza bags. I wrapped the insides of the bag in pink tissue paper. The evening reception was great, everybody had taken the helium from the balloons by the end of the night – it was so funny.

Is there anything you’d like to change, with hindsight?
I had a two-tier sponge wedding cake. I hadn’t seen the cake before the wedding because it wasn’t ready. When I arrived at the hotel the top layer of the cake had collapsed into the bottom. The bottom tier was fine but the top was ruined. I didn’t let it ruin my wedding because what’s a cake at the end of the day?

What advice would you give to couples currently planning their wedding?
Think about what you really want. I wanted a small wedding breakfast, with the people that I cared about. In the end that’s what I had, and all the guests really enjoyed it and said how relaxed it was. We were paying for our own wedding so it was easier to do. My mum and I had so many arguments about this, and she even said she wasn’t coming. The people she wanted to come hadn’t bothered with me for years, so I just reminded her what the day was for. Now, looking back, I did the right thing for us. If there’s one thing you do, enjoy yourself and remember what the day is about. Always remember on the day that you look beautiful and it’s your time to shine.

Is there any other detail that you would like to share?
Confetti was the best place for everything to decoarate the room, and the service was great. The selection of colours and themes is brilliant and the prices are very reasonable. Well done Confetti!
