Karen and Matthew Real Engagement Story

It was my birthday in January and Matthew said that he had arranged a surprise trip for me in February so I needed to book four days off work. He said I was going on my own and I would need a good pair of walking boots. I was devastated – I hate walking anywhere. I was hoping for a spa break and now I was dreading what he had arranged for me! He wouldn’t tell me what to pack for the trip or anything – I was so frustrated with him and I was actually a real horror.

Anyway, Monday came of the week I was going away. Matthew went off to Oslo on business saying he would be back on Tuesday evening in time to take me to my surprise destination on Wednesday morning. I was getting more and more het up about this as I felt totally out of control. On Tuesday afternoon, Matthew called to say that Oslo airport had closed due to bad weather and he was staying one more night. He told me not to worry as his mum was coming to collect me at 4.30am the next morning to drive me to where I needed to go!

Wednesday morning came and Lynn arrived at 4.30am on the dot. I loaded my huge bag into the car; I had packed for every eventuality and even had stiletto slingbacks with me. We drove for 45 minutes, eventually arriving at Birmingham airport. Lynn handed me an envelope with my passport and a letter from Matthew together with a flight ticket to Stockholm. The letter told me to board a flight to Stockholm and upon arrival, check in for a flight to Kiruna. I had never heard of the place.

Matthew met me at the departure gate with a smile all over his face – he still wouldn’t tell me where I was going. We arrived at Kiruna to be met by a rep from the Ice Hotel. I couldn’t believe it! That night was magical – we stayed in an ice room on an ice bed – I have never been so cold in all my life! The experience was unbelievable.

Next night we went out on snow mobiles in the frozen countryside, over vast lakes and forests to watch the Northern Lights. After our meal of moose soup in a log cabin, Matthew suggested a walk in the woods. After a few minutes, all on our own in the snow, in the middle of nowhere, he got down on one knee and proposed. I couldn’t stop smiling. I have never been made to feel so special in all my life.

We are getting married on 30 April 2005 at Gleneagle Hotel, which I’m sure will be special, but I can’t see anything topping the proposal. I’m still on cloud nine!
