Katy and Spencer’s Real Life Wedding
Katy and Spencer
06/01/2005 – Alexandra Palace, London
How and when did you meet?
We met in the pub where we worked at City University in 2002. We clicked straight away!
Where, when and how did he (or you!) propose?
He didn’t and neither did I . We had a chat one day and then just said ‘Shall we get married?’ and that was it!
Did you have hen and stag celebrations?
I went out on two separate ‘nights out’ with friends with dinner and drinking. Spencer didn’t really have a stag night although he did go to Brighton to see a mate on one of the nights I was out!
Did your groom help you with the wedding planning?
I found the venues for the wedding and party but then we did everything else together. Spence works much better under pressure so he was great towards the end.
Did you use confetti to plan your wedding? If so, how did the website help you?
Yes, for details of stockists and the online shop was great!
Do you have a confetti web page?
No.
Did you buy any confetti products for your wedding? If so, did you visit a store, buy online or by mail order?
Yes we bought balloons, sparkly table confetti, candle holders and personalised chocolates.
Tell us about your outfit, and where you bought it.
I wore a dark purple dress from John Lewis with a matching fur mini wrap and some trendy silver shoes. We didn’t want a traditional wedding so I knew I didn’t want to wear a ‘white wedding dress’.
Did you have bridesmaids? If so, who did you choose and what did they wear?
No.
Who did your groom choose for his best man and ushers, and what did they wear?
Spencer had his mate, Martin, as best man. As everyone could wear what they wanted he just wore a suit.
Did you have a civil or religious ceremony?
We had a civil ceremony.
Where did you hold your ceremony?
We had the ceremony at Alexandra Palace in London. We hired a small room for the service and had photos in the Palm Court.
Where did you hold your reception?
We only had sixteen guests so we didn’t have a reception as such. Instead we went back to our flat for Champagne and speeches and then on to our favourite restaurant which was just around the corner. We had a big party at a community centre on Saturday 8th January for everyone else!
Did you have any special wedding transport?
Yes I had a white London taxi to take myself, my sister, my mum and dad to Alexandra Palace and then Spencer and I back to our flat.
How many guests did you invite to your wedding, and did you have a separate evening guest list?
We had 16 guests to the wedding and about 80 to the party on Saturday
Did your reception have a particular theme in terms of colour or style?
We decorated the rooms in the community centre ourselves with a lilac and silver theme. We had helium balloons and tealights on the tables. It looked really pretty and everyone was great at helping us get it ready!
How did you incorporate this in to your table settings?
We didn’t have table settings at the party. My sister in law, Sam, made table names for the restaurant we went to after the ceremony.
Did you give your guests favours?
Each guest had a personalised chocolate and slice of wedding cake at the party.
Describe your flowers (bouquets and table decorations). Who was your florist?
I didn’t carry any flowers. My auntie Pat made a lovely flower arrangement which we put in Alexandra Palace and took to the party as well.
What did you choose to have on your menu? Did you have an outside caterer or did your venue handle the catering?
We used the in-house caterer at the community centre for the party buffet. The food was delicious and a mixture of traditional food like cheese and pineapple to more trendy food like tempura!
What did you choose for your wedding cake?
We had two cakes that were bought from a shop. The first was chocolate for the wedding day with our names iced around the edge and the second was a three tier fruit cake and sponge cake for the party. The three tier cake was decorated with lilac ribbon and flowers.
Did you have any entertainment during the day or evening?
At the party my cousin, Richard, and a friend of ours, Jon, DJ’d. The chef from the community centre is also a DJ so he played some music as well.
Did you have a gift list? If so, who did you have your list with?
We asked for money for our honeymoon fund.
Where did you spend your first night and honeymoon? Who did you book your honeymoon with?
We spent our wedding night at a trendy hotel in Clerkenwell in London. It was fantastic!
What was your most memorable moment of the day?
Everything really. The ceremony was lovely and our sisters did a reading each which was really nice. The party on Saturday was good fun and it was great to see all our friends and family.
Is there anything you would do differently, or any advice you would give to other brides?
A cliché but just enjoy it – it goes quickly!!
