How old were you both when you got engaged?
I was and still am 29, Jon was and still is 34.

How did your partner (or you) propose?
We had booked a long weekend trip to Venice. We both had never been there before and were looking forward to a little romantic get away. I had no idea that Jon was planning anything. We arrived by water taxi to our amazing hotel, late on the Friday night. Saturday we had a gorgeous breakfast in our hotel and headed out to do some sight seeing. Venice is so beautiful. It was the 2nd of May and the sunshine was gorgeous. Jon and I headed for St Marks Sq, which was very crowded. Jon was a bit twitchy and led me down to the water’s edge to take a gondola, he said it would be the best way for us to get our bearings. Anyway, we were sailing round the canals of Venice and Jon kept asking me to sit next to him as I had gone to the other end of the gondola to take pictures. He said he had a poem to tell me. I laughed at the thought of him writing a poem, but then he pulled out a piece of paper and started reading. His voice was choked and I just remember the sound from around me disappearing and I was just totally focused on Jon and the words he was saying. All about us and how we met and how he felt about me. The last line of his poem was, “Will you be my bride on our wedding day? ” I said, “what?” and he got down onto one knee in the gondola and said ‘Kerry Phelan will you marry me?” It was so romantic and perfect! I of course said yes one the initial shock had washed over me, and he pulled out a box with the most perfect diamond engagement ring in it I have ever seen!! Then everyone started clapping! We hadn’t realised but we had been going under a bridge when Jon had asked and there were tons of people watching to see my response! It was truly fantastic and a moment I will treasure for the rest of my life! The gondola man even started singing to top it all off!!
Who did you share the news of your engagement with first?
We called our parents first and I called my big brother and Jon called his sister while we were away. We waited till we got back to break the news to all our friends.
Describe your ring.
It’s so beautiful! It’s from Asprey, 1842 collection Asprey cut V mount micro pave border & mount. 0.66ct Asprey cut diamond D/VS1 ring set in platinum mount with 66 round diamonds totalling 0.38ct. Total ring caret 1.04ct!! It’s just stunning!!!
Did you help choose the ring?
No! I had never even been to Asprey never mind looked at their rings! Jon kind of new that I would want something traditional, but we hadn’t really talked about engagement rings. I couldn’t have picked a more perfect ring if I had tried!!
Will your partner wear an engagement ring as well?
No, but he’s already tried on some wedding rings!
Did you have an engagement party?
We are planning one for the beginning of June with all our friends and will have a get together with our families in the next few weeks too.
If so, where was it held?
Thinking of the biscuit tin in Shoreditch House.

Did you have a particular theme for your party?
elegant, bubbly celebrations.
When do you plan to marry?
Hopefully next July. Depending if we can get the venue we want and of course saving up all those bucks by then!
What are you looking forward to the most about planning a wedding?
Everything. But most of all the finer details that will make our wedding day special to us.
