Sample material: Famous declarations of love
Sample material you can use when you want to say “I love you” in the words of the great and the good
‘In the words of David Beckham: “She rocks my world!”‘
‘As Elizabeth Barrett Browning once wrote: “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach.”‘
Edward VIII made one of the famous declarations of love ever when he announced to the nation: “I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as King as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love.” I know that I, too, if push came to shove, would gladly lay down my country for my wife (or in fact lay down in the country with my wife).’
‘We’re very aware that marriage is something that needs to be worked at. As John Lennon said: “Love is like a precious plant. You can’t just leave it in the cupboard or just think it’s going to get on by itself. You’ve got to keep watering it. You’ve got to really look after it and nurture it.”‘
When I think of my new husband/wife, I’m reminded of the passionate letters exchanged by the poet Dylan Thomas and his wife Caitlin. Of course I substitute his/her name for Caitlin’s when I read lines like these: “Caitlin. Just to write down your name like that. Caitlin. I don’t have to say My Dear, My darling, my sweetheart, though I do say these words, to you in myself, all day and night. Caitlin. And all the words are in that one word.”‘
