Speeches

Toast material: groom

Wedding toast material for you to adapt, if it’s your big day

The groom traditionally toasts the bridesmaids/maid of honour. He may also choose to toast his wife, and his wife will then reply and toast the bridesmaids. He may also toast the hosts, traditionally his new in‐laws, especially if there are no bridesmaids.

Edible joke

‘Apparently, I’m now supposed to toast our hosts, my parents‐in‐law. That’s a bit of a shame, because I think I’d rather have them spit‐roasted with onions and lots of garlic… Oh, that kind of toast. Awfully sorry, Mr and Mrs Johnson: you know I think you’re good enough to eat! To Mr and Mrs Johnson, ladies and gentlemen!’

Thanks, ladies

‘I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the bridesmaids for their sterling work. I’ve discovered that for an occasion like this, you really do need to have experts on table flowers, leg waxing, eyelash curling and themed party favours on hand, and Alice, Hannah and Ellen certainly fit the bill. They really have been essential in making this a perfect day. Ladies and gentlemen, please raise your glasses to the bridesmaids.

One for the parents

‘A wedding is a coming together of two families, and I couldn’t have wished to join a friendlier family than Stella’s, so I’d like to end my speech by thanking our hosts and my new parents‐in‐law, Betty and Stan, for making this such a wonderful occasion. It’s often said that wedding days belong to the happy couple, but there are many people who have helped to make today so perfect. I’d also like to thank my parents, Pauline and Max, for everything they’ve done for us. Without the hard work of our parents, Stella and I wouldn’t have been able to concentrate on having sucha good time today! Please raise your glasses to them.’

Love lines

‘I’d like to end my speech by proposing a toast to my bride. Without wishing to embarrass anyone by getting too sentimental, Charlotte is all I have ever dreamed of. Someone once said that to love is to receive a glimpse of heaven. Well, I feel I am truly in heaven today… Please raise your glasses to the beautiful bride.’
