What to buy

The choice of wedding stationery available is enormous ‐‐ how do you choose what’s right for you?

The invitation

Your wedding invitations will set the tone for your wedding, so they should really reflect the style and level of formality of the day. Choosing the style of your invitations is simply a matter of taste. Have a look at the Confetti create your own stationery shop pages for some ideas.

Traditional weddings generally call for formal invitations, while smaller, civil weddings often use more contemporary styles such as the Mandalay range. Classic wedding invitations usually use simple, traditional lettering, ideally engraved on good‐quality white or cream card. The format is an upright, folded card with the wording on one side only. Black or silver lettering is the most popular, and the guest’s name is usually handwritten at the top left‐hand side of the page.

For themed weddings, you might choose to have invitations that are in keeping with the theme. We have a huge range of wedding themes with matching stationery so you can find something which is perfect for you.

Don’t forget that you’ll need separate invitations for those being invited to the reception only. There’s also the option of including response cards together with printed envelopes.

What else is needed?

The range of items and styles on offer is often vast ‐‐ it’s rarely as simple as choosing what style of invitation you want. There are various other stationery items that you may need, from order of service sheets to after dinner mints with personalised wrappers. Some general examples include:

  • invitations
  • response cards
  • envelope seals
  • cake boxes
  • place cards
  • order of service sheets
  • matchbooks
  • napkins
  • napkin rings
  • coasters
  • bridal favour boxes
  • guest scrolls
  • menus
  • thank you cards
  • guest autograph album
  • adhesive bottle labels
  • personalised ribbons.

Many of these items make delightful keepsakes and can be a great way of continuing a theme through a wedding. But the key is not to get too carried away. You’re also likely to be working to a strict budget so always prioritise your need‐to‐haves over your nice‐to‐haves.

You might also decide to create your own stationery but don’t let your creativity get carried away and your design doesn’t overwhelm the essential information.
